Bảng so sánh nhanh
| Streaming lossless | File local | |
|---|---|---|

Lossless streaming vs local files: the real difference
Apple Music, Tidal and Qobuz all stream lossless now. So is streaming any different from a lossless file on your device? The truth: the bits can be identical — the real difference is elsewhere. Here's what's a myth and what actually matters.
Apple Music streams ALAC up to 24-bit/192kHz, Tidal dropped MQA and went back to FLAC/hi-res FLAC, and Qobuz has been FLAC hi-res for years. All of them are genuinely lossless. So for the same master, is a lossless stream any different from a FLAC file on your device?
At the bit level, they can be identical
This surprises people: a lossless track streamed from Qobuz and the same track as a FLAC on your device — same master — carry exactly the same audio data. Lossless streaming isn't a "worse compression"; it's the original bits, just delivered over the network instead of read from disk. So "streaming sounds worse than a file" as a blanket statement is simply false.
The real difference isn't "file quality." It's three things: whether the playback path is bit-perfect, whether you own it, and reliability.
Where streaming often falls short: the bit-perfect path
Having lossless bits at the source is one thing; getting them to your ears intact at the native sample rate is another. On phones, a streaming app's audio usually goes through the OS mixer, which tends to force everything to a fixed rate (often 48kHz). At that point, even a 44.1kHz FLAC source has been resampled — no longer bit-perfect.
In practice: Tidal/Qobuz desktop apps have an "exclusive mode" for bit-perfect; but on iPhone, Apple Music doesn't auto-match the sample rate per track — bit-perfect there needs an external DAC and manual steps. A dedicated local player (like Synq) sends the file's exact bits at the native rate over a USB DAC, bypassing the mixer. See what bit-perfect means.
Owning vs renting
This is the biggest difference, and it has nothing to do with sound:
- Streaming = renting. Stop paying and access is gone. Albums get pulled from the catalog, swapped for a different remaster, or lose their license. "Offline downloads" are still DRM-locked and expire with the subscription.
- Local file = yours. Offline forever, no dependency on the network or an app staying alive. Playlists, tags and cover art are yours to manage and never vanish.
Reliability & control
A local file plays instantly, needs no connection, uses no data and doesn't stutter on weak signal — hi-res streaming eats a fair bit of bandwidth. Local also gives you EQ/AutoEQ, DSD playback, your own NAS/cloud, and full control of your library.
Quick comparison
| Lossless streaming | Local file | |
|---|---|---|
| Bit quality | Genuinely lossless | Genuinely lossless |
| Bit-perfect on a phone | Usually resampled by the mixer | Yes (exclusive-mode player) |
| Ownership | Rental — stops when you stop paying | Yours, forever |
| Offline / reliability | Needs data, can stutter | Instant, no connection |
| Library breadth | Tens of millions of tracks | Only what you have |
| Discovery | Excellent | On your own |
Bottom line
Discovery & breadth
A vast catalogue, easy to try new music anywhere. The bits are genuinely lossless — just remember it's rented.
Ownership + bit-perfect + offline
The albums you truly love, kept forever and played bit-perfect over a DAC, with no dependence on a network or subscription.
The smart move is to combine them: stream to discover widely, then buy/keep the favourites as local files to own and play bit-perfect. Read more in bit-perfect and hi-res vs CD.
