Xem thêm bài hi-res so với CD.
Bảng so sánh nhanh các nguồn
| Nguồn | Chất lượng | Sở hữu file? | Hợp với |
|---|---|---|---|
Where to build a lossless library: the legal sources
Real lossless listening starts with real lossless files — ideally files you own. This is the honest shortlist of the three most trustworthy legal sources: buy on Bandcamp, download hi-res from Qobuz/HDtracks, and rip your own CDs. Plus how to rip safely and how to verify a file before you trust it.
Spending on a DAC, amp and good headphones while feeding them random MP3s wastes the whole rig. The foundation of a good listening setup isn't the gear — it's the source file. The good news: building a legal lossless library you actually own is neither hard nor necessarily expensive.
The principle: real lossless + you own the file
Before naming sources, set the bar. A good source meets two conditions:
- Genuine lossless — FLAC/ALAC/WAV straight from the master, not a lossy file (MP3/AAC) stuffed into a FLAC container.
- You own the file — downloaded, DRM-free, playable offline forever, not dependent on an app staying alive or a subscription staying active.
Lossless streaming (Apple Music, Amazon, Tidal) is great to listen, but gives you no file to keep — cancel and it's gone. So for "building a library," we prioritise sources that let you own the file.
1. Bandcamp — buy straight from the artist
If you pick only one, this is the most decent choice. Bandcamp lets you buy an album/track and download it in several lossless formats (FLAC, ALAC, WAV), DRM-free, yours forever. Most of the money goes to the artist, so you get real files and support the people who made them.
- Pick FLAC for a compact, universal file (ALAC suits the Apple ecosystem).
- Strong for indie, jazz, electronic and experimental — much of which isn't on the big stores.
- Buy once, re-download many times from your account.
2. Qobuz, HDtracks & hi-res stores
When you want the official release, including 24-bit hi-res, download-to-own stores are the place:
- Qobuz — both streaming and a store selling downloadable files (16-bit/CD and 24-bit hi-res), with good quality and metadata.
- HDtracks / ProStudioMasters / 7digital — specialise in hi-res files from major labels.
An honest note: "hi-res 24-bit/192kHz" sounds impressive, but in most cases it's not audibly different from 16-bit/44.1kHz CD — don't pay a big premium just for the numbers. See hi-res vs CD.
3. Rip your own CDs — cheapest and perfectly accurate
Here's the tip nobody explains properly: if you already own the CD (or buy used discs cheaply), ripping it correctly gives you a bit-exact lossless copy of the original — it can't get any more "real," and you legally own that content.
Tools to use: Exact Audio Copy (EAC) on Windows, XLD on macOS — both free. Turn on secure mode, output FLAC, and let it check against AccurateRip: if your rip matches thousands of others who ripped the same disc, you know the file is error-free.
Lossless streaming: great to hear, but not your file
Quick source comparison
| Source | Quality | Own the file? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bandcamp | FLAC/ALAC (often 16-bit) | Yes, DRM-free | Indie, supporting artists |
| Qobuz / HDtracks | 16-bit & 24-bit hi-res | Yes, DRM-free | Official releases |
| Rip your own CD | Bit-exact 16-bit FLAC | Yes, fully | Cheapest, most accurate |
| Apple/Amazon/Tidal | Lossless & hi-res | No (DRM, subscription) | Listening & discovery |
| YouTube / torrents | Often lossy in disguise | Risky (copyright + fakes) | Best avoided |
Verify before you trust: keep "fake FLAC" out
Even from a good source, a file can be packaged wrong — or someone hands you a FLAC that's really an MP3 upconverted back. Before it goes in your library, look at the spectrum: genuine lossless keeps highs up to ~20–22kHz, while lossy-in-disguise shows a hard "wall" cutting off around ~16–19kHz. Music Check does this on-device, privately. See how to verify quality and spotting fake lossless.
Bottom line
Bandcamp + ripping CDs
Bandcamp for new and indie, CD ripping for albums you already have — both genuine lossless and truly yours.
Qobuz to download, streaming to discover
Qobuz/HDtracks when you want the official hi-res; Apple/Tidal to sample, then buy the favourites to keep.
Bottom line: a good lossless library is built from real, legal source files — bought on Bandcamp, downloaded from Qobuz, or ripped from your own discs — then verified before you trust them. With the library in hand, the rest is playing it right: import and play bit-perfect, and read where to invest first.
